"From the outset Magnet Theatre has always conducted skills workshops and outreach projects alongside its productions.
These skills workshops and outreach projects are designed to teach a whole range of performance and life skills to young people in particular, and to develop new audiences and participants for the performing arts in the future.
In September 1998, in an attempt to formalise the training and development aspects of the company’s work, The Magnet Theatre Educational Trust was established.
We believe that we all have a responsibility to develop a more just, free and peaceful society. Transformation can never be just about developing skill. Fundamentally it involves developing the ability to imgaine alternative realities and dream different futures.
For 13 years The Magnet Theatre Educational Trust has invested in young people in the Western Cape through sustained, long-term interventions that develop creativity, imagination, skills and a commitment to ongoing education.
Our work is focused on two geographical areas: the sprawling urban townships around Cape Town and the small rural communities that make up the Cederberg Municipality along the N7. The communities in these two areas face the multiple challenges of poverty, crime, HIV-Aids, drug and alcohol abuse, and high school drop-out rates. They are also full of bright and creative young people excited about the future despite the obstacles they face. Our commitment to these two areas extends over 10 years. During these 10 years we have guided 9 students to University, trained another 20 to become employable in the industry and enriched the lives of hundreds of others. We believe we have the programs to develop confidence, creative thinking and skill in these young people, to make them more employable, to provide a buffer to their absorption into gangs, and to provide concrete stepping-stones into further education.
